Dr. Vivek Tiwari
Profile: Dr. Vivek Tiwari obtained his masters in Biochemistry from Department of Biochemistry, University of Hyderabad in the year 2008 and bachelor’s in science from Banaras Hindu University in the year 2006. He pursued his PhD on understanding neurotransmitter energetic in mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy at CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India during 2008-2014. Dr.Tiwari was a Postdoctoral fellow in the duration of 2014-2019 at Advanced Imaging Research Center, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, USA. His postdoctoral work involved development and application of MR imaging and in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) methods to understand human brain functions and metabolic alterations in gliomas.
My research group employs advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy methods to study neurovascular and metabolic health of human brain during aging and brain disorders. My group believes that brain functions are outcome of tight coordination between vascular supply to brain structures and brain energy demand. Vascular insults to brain may lead to structural and metabolic alterations in brain disorders that may precede the symptomatic stage. Therefore, we are performing a battery of whole brain in vivo mapping of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF), BOLD fMRI measurements, structural imaging and spectroscopy in healthy human subjects, and patients with dementia and brain tumors. We are extensively studying impact of small vessel disease pathologies such as WMH on human brain structures, fiber communications and cognitive performance in our ongoing large cohort studies, TLSA (Tata Longitudinal Study of Aging) and SANSCOG (Srinivaspura Aging Neuro Senescence and Cognition). The neuroimaging studies are being performed using state-of-art 3 Tesla human MR scanner.
Conventional MRI methods needs to be tailored to have precise information for clinical applications. We tailor and develop novel MRI, MRS and functional MR methods to identify subtle changes with high precision and reproducibility. Machine Learning and novel deep learning-based models are being developed to improve the MR data analysis and its application in evaluating brain health.
